Project 81 / J. Gilbert Reese Park is a recent land acquisition located at 81031 Overseas Highway on Upper Matecumbe Key. Through 100% philanthropy, The Islamorada Foundation is thrilled to offer a “win-win” opportunity for the community of Islamorada. With a successful campaign, the benefits will be seen in 3 ways – prevent further commercial development by preserving this site, protecting a vital parcel of Upper Matecumbe Key land for community benefit and removing a blighted (eyesore) parcel in the Upper Matecumbe Key Corridor.
Phase I (Complete) – $1,300,000 (June thru January 2019) – land purchase, removal of existing 8200 sf building, extensive invasive vegetation removal, existing tree maintenance, site clean up.
Phase II (Current) – $745,000 (February 2019 – thru 2019) – Open Space for outdoor activities and community gatherings, playground with shade features, Pickleball court(s), public restroom, public drinking fountains, 20+vehicle parking lot, park benches, bicycle racks and education/information kiosks, monitor invasive and exotic vegetation, increase vegetation of native species (grasses, shrubs, understory and canopy trees)
Phase III (Future) – TBD – Small community activity center/support building for The Islamorada Foundation
(Conceptual rendering of completed phase II. Special thanks to Integrated Architecture – Grand Rapids, MI)
